Are these temperatures ok for my new snake tank (ball python)?
I’ve set up a take for my ball python before I actually buy it so that the temperature can be correct when I take it home. I have a 20 gallon long tank, with a 6”x8” under tank heater, and a 60 watt basking lamp. I can get the hot end of the tank to the correct temperature (90 F), but the cooler end of the tank hovers around 78 F, when everything I’ve read says it has to be between 80-85. Also, at night, again, the warm side is correct (80 F), but the cooler side drops down to 73 F, when I know it should be no lower than 75. Are these temperatures ok? I don’t want to cause my new snake any undue stress.
And I don’t want to sound rude or anything, but answers from experienced people only? Not just laypeople, or random people’s guesses. Thanks
Dropping to 78F on the cool side is fine - but lower than 75F is not okay as you know. If I were you, at night I would try to keep the hot side around 82-84F, that might help keep the cool side a bit higher for you.
Honestly I wouldn’t stick with the aquarium and lamp. They look nice, but it is exceptionally hard to control humidity in a screen top aquarium, especially with a lamp which will dry the enclosure out bad. The best and easiest setup for most snakes is using plastic tubs like Sterilite or Rubbermaid. I personally use the 41qt Sterilite size from Wal-Mart. These are perfect for adult ball pythons. They hold heat and humidity perfectly. I use flexwatt heat tape for heat but an under tank heater is just as good. For younger snakes I use the 28qt Sterilite size. You can melt air holes around the top of the tub with a soldering iron or use a drill to put the holes in. Super easy and cheap. You can do the aquarium but if you start having shedding issues, switch to a tub. Your snake will be glad you did! Good luck.
